The Most Common Mistakes Candidates Make in English Exams
English exams often penalize small mistakes that can be avoided with good preparation. Many candidates have an adequate level of English but lose marks because they do not read the instructions carefully, fail to respect the required word count, leave compulsory points undeveloped, or do not set aside time to review their answers.
One of the most common mistakes is responding impulsively without making sure they have fully understood exactly what the task requires. Spending a few seconds interpreting the instructions correctly helps avoid incomplete or inappropriate answers. It is also essential to manage time effectively, as getting stuck on one question can affect the rest of the exam. Moving on, continuing, and returning later to the more difficult tasks is a very useful strategy.
In the writing section, many candidates tend to translate literally from their native language, which results in unnatural-sounding sentences. Thinking in English and using expressions that are appropriate to the level being assessed helps improve the quality of written work. It is also important to avoid overly basic vocabulary and incorporate more precise structures that demonstrate a stronger command of the language.
Grammar mistakes are another common source of lost marks. Confusion between verb tenses, errors with the third person singular, articles, or prepositions can affect the final score, especially when they are repeated throughout the exam. For this reason, it is important for candidates to identify their most frequent mistakes and work on them before the exam.
The final review is a key stage that is often overlooked. Spending a few minutes checking spelling, grammar, coherence, and structure can help correct simple mistakes and significantly improve the final result. In writing tasks, a clear organization with an introduction, main body, and conclusion, together with the appropriate use of linking words, helps communicate ideas more effectively.
Finally, practising under conditions similar to those of the actual exam is essential. Taking mock exams with the same time limits and format allows candidates to become familiar with the real testing situation and develop greater confidence and independence.
At NOVACADEMIA, we prepare our candidates not only to improve their English level but also to acquire the strategies they need to approach their exams with confidence. We work individually on each candidate’s most common mistakes, practise with real exam papers, reinforce effective time management, and help every candidate identify both their strengths and areas for improvement. Our goal is for them to arrive at the exam fully prepared, with the skills and confidence they need to demonstrate their full potential.
As a result, 95% of our students pass the official Cambridge English examinations.
